A new AWS region has arrived in Central Mexico
Updated: Feb 5

On January 15, 2025, AWS announced the opening of the AWS Mexico Central region, with 3 availability zones. It is an unprecedented opportunity for companies looking to optimize their infrastructure or strategically implement Disaster Recovery plans in Mexico and Latin America.
Our mission is to provide you with architectural solutions that meet the current needs of your business and are also resilient, efficient, and scalable. If you are in Mexico, this new region will be key to guaranteeing you all these benefits of the cloud.
Steps to enable the new region
Enter the AWS console
In the top right navigation bar, go to Manage Regions,
In the AWS Regions section search for Mexico (Central)
Click the box and enable
Billing and Cost Management > Account

Search Mexico (Central) and click Enable

Features of the new region
The new AWS Mexico Central region includes three Availability Zones, identified by the region code mx-central-1. This new AWS region offers the ability to host and process data within the Mexican territory.
What does this mean? It means that it is now easier for you to comply with local data sovereignty and privacy regulations. Better yet, if you are located in Mexico you can now provide support for 143 security standards and compliance certifications. These include PCI-DSS, HIPAA/HITECH, FedRAMP, GDPR, FIPS 140-2, and NIST 800-171.
Benefits of the new region in Central Mexico
Robust Disaster Recovery Plans
The opening of the AWS Mexico Central region offers an opportunity for organizations seeking to design or improve Disaster Recovery (DR) strategies. How does the new region help Disaster Recovery? Having a nearby region allows for faster, more economical, and more profitable solutions to be implemented, with lower latency.
All of this together ensures faster recovery times (RTOs) and more efficient recovery point objectives (RPOs). Both are benefits that align with the principles of the Reliability pillar of the AWS Well-Architected Framework.
Compliance and data sovereignty
If your business operates in regulated sectors such as finance or healthcare, hosting your workloads in the Central Mexico region ensures that your data remains within the country, aligning with the Security pillar.
Improved latency for local users
The new region enables faster and more efficient user experiences, which are essential to meeting the Operational Excellence pillar.
Scalability and cost efficiency
Designing your applications with the Cost Optimization pillar in mind is easier with this expansion, by reducing data transport costs and leveraging local services.
Sustainability in architectural design Following the pillar of Sustainability, this new region uses state-of-the-art infrastructure optimized for energy consumption, helping to reduce your carbon footprint.
